The First OpenMind Hands-On Workshop
We hosted our inaugural hands-on workshop at OpenMind, and it was an awesome experience to share within our community.
Idea behind it
The workshop was our way to test what we are building and get feedback from the developers. Could people, in just a couple of hours, go from “hello” to building and commanding a robot that listens, speaks, moves, and perceives? Could they imagine new ways to extend and improve it?
How it went
They started with running a sample agent on their systems and interacting with it, further the participants walked through a step-by-step workflow to create a new config from scratch.
Starting from hardware connection to adding hardware specific plugins such as
ASR (automatic speech recognition) to let the robot understand spoken commands.
TTS (text-to-speech) so the robot could respond verbally.
Movements like walk forward, walk backward, turn right, bow, crouch and many more
Vision modules to enable the robot to perceive its environment and act accordingly.
The participants then interacted with the robot using natural language, giving spoken commands and observing it respond intelligently and take actions.
Furthermore, the attendees shared what they want to build with OM1 once they get back home. The enthusiasm and excitement amongst them, gave us validation on why we thought of it in the first place.
What’s Next?
The response exceeded our expectations, with far more registrations than we could accommodate this time. To those who couldn’t get a spot, don’t worry. This is just the beginning.
We’re planning more workshops and community sessions in the coming months so more of you can join, learn, build, and contribute. Keep an eye on this space (and our event page) for upcoming opportunities to get involved.
Join the Journey
At OpenMind, we’re building the Android for robots, and we’d love to have more contributors, developers, and innovators join us on this mission. Check out our platform to learn more and explore ways to collaborate.
Go give us a star on GitHub if you like what we are building.
